Salesforce as a Student Information System
After Ellucian PowerCampus: the student record on Salesforce.
The PowerCampus institutions we talk to are usually working to a timeline they did not set. Ten months, kickoff to a live registration term, is what replacing PowerCampus has actually taken — so the question is less whether it fits the window you have than what the work looks like inside it.
In production
This migration has already been done.
Palmer College of Chiropractic replaced Ellucian PowerCampus in 2026. Its student record — registration, academic records, student finance and compliance reporting — runs on Salesforce Education Cloud today, with real students registering in real terms on the system this page describes.
Where things stand
The situation around Ellucian PowerCampus.
In June 2024 the PowerCampus Users Group told its members that Ellucian was preparing to announce an end to support, and that the product would continue in maintenance mode — Severity 1 security fixes and regulatory updates — while institutions planned for its eventual end. No date has been published since. Gartner lists the product as legacy, and PowerCampus does not appear in Ellucian’s current product line.
What runs natively
Everything Ellucian PowerCampus holds today, native.
The record of truth moves whole. In our deployments these run natively on Salesforce — configured on the platform, not built beside it.
- Registration
- Prerequisite enforcement, section capacity and waitlists.
- Grading
- Grade entry, grade rolls and grade-change workflow.
- GPA and academic standing
- Computed in the platform, not imported into it.
- Official transcripts
- Produced natively; delivered through your existing service.
- Course catalog and class scheduling
- Terms, sessions, sections, rooms and times.
- Degree audit
- Degree progress and what-if analysis.
- Transfer credit
- Articulation rules, not just stored evaluations.
- Student financials
- Fee assessment, accounts receivable, payments and refunds.
Financial aid stays in the system your aid office trusts — live integrations with PowerFAIDS, Regent and Campus Ivy tie aid status into the same student record. Reporting and compliance run natively, by jurisdiction.
What changes day to day
The work after the migration, not just the migration.
A replacement is judged on the years after go-live, not the months before it. Four things institutions tell us changed, once the record was on a platform.
- Connecting the next system is an API call
- Every object in the student record is addressable through documented APIs, and changes publish as real-time events — no file drop, no parser, no overnight window to miss. Established routes already run to the LMS, single sign-on, payment gateways and the Clearinghouse, and they do not come apart at the next release.
- Security patching stops being yours to chase
- Patching is the platform’s job, continuously, and the bar is set by the banking, healthcare and government workloads that share the infrastructure. Nobody at your institution is tracking a bulletin, waiting on a hotfix, or circulating a workaround.
- The record arrives whole
- Academic history, transfer credit, holds and financial history move as the record of truth rather than as an archive parked alongside the new system. Registration, grading, transcripts and degree audit run natively from the first live term.
- The people who can run it are hireable
- What sits beneath your record is standard Salesforce — configuration first, code where it earns its place. That makes the skills market the largest in enterprise software rather than a shrinking specialty you compete for.
Ten months, typically — for institutions under 10,000 students.
Institution size drives the timeline, and larger or more structurally complex institutions take longer — we will tell you where you fall in the first conversation. For context, the industry norm for an SIS replacement is measured in years.
Common questions
Moving off Ellucian PowerCampus.
Is Ellucian ending support for PowerCampus?
Ellucian has not published an end-of-support date. In June 2024 the PowerCampus Users Group told its members that Ellucian was preparing to announce one, that the product would continue in maintenance mode — Severity 1 security fixes and regulatory updates — and that institutions should plan for its eventual end. No date has been published since. Gartner lists the product as legacy, and PowerCampus does not appear in Ellucian’s current product line.
Do we have to move to Ellucian Student?
No. Ellucian Student is a real option and for some institutions it is the right one. What is worth knowing is that it is a different product rather than a version upgrade — the data migration, the reconfiguration and the change management are a full replacement project whichever direction you go. That makes this a genuine selection decision rather than a renewal, and it is worth running it as one.
How do other systems connect to the student record?
Through documented APIs on every object, plus real-time event streams when something changes — not scheduled file transfers or an overnight window. Established routes already run to learning management systems, single sign-on providers including Microsoft Entra ID and Okta, payment gateways, and the National Student Clearinghouse. Connecting the next system is configuration rather than a project, and integrations do not come apart when the platform updates.
Who is responsible for security patching after we move?
Salesforce is. Patching runs continuously as part of the platform, and the security engineering is set by the banking, healthcare and government workloads that share the same infrastructure — Salesforce Government Cloud Plus is authorized at FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 5. Nobody at your institution is tracking a security bulletin, waiting on a hotfix, or circulating a workaround to colleagues.
What happens to our custom reports and Action Rules?
They are rebuilt as platform capability rather than carried across as custom code. Reporting becomes native reporting that your own staff can build and change, and the automation Action Rules perform becomes platform automation — configured, versioned and visible to anyone with the right permissions. The rebuild is real work, and it is scoped in the first phase rather than discovered late.
How quickly can a PowerCampus replacement be done?
Palmer College of Chiropractic replaced PowerCampus in ten months, from kickoff to a live registration term, and runs its student record on Salesforce Education Cloud today. Ten months is typical for institutions under 10,000 students; larger or more structurally complex institutions take longer, and we will tell you where you fall in the first conversation. The industry norm for an SIS replacement is measured in years.
